Our approach

Why the advertised rent is only the start

Why another rent guide?

Most rent roundups quote a single citywide average and stop there. That number blends luxury towers with walk-up units, so it rarely matches anything you will actually be offered. Flatwise Atlas works the other way round: we start with the places where a typical one-bedroom still costs well under the state or city average, then add the costs that land on top of rent — utilities, internet, parking, application fees and renters insurance.

Every guide below ranks ten places from best value to "worth it if you can stretch". You will see typical rent ranges such as $850–$1,050 a month, the usual renters insurance price for that market (often $12–$20 a month in the U.S.), and the lease rules that change what you pay upfront.

Note

Prices are typical asking ranges for an unfurnished one-bedroom unless stated otherwise. Listings move weekly, so treat our numbers as a starting budget and check live listings before you apply.
